How to transform broken storage bed

Question

I would like some ideas about how to make this once storage bed useful and/or pretty for my daughter? (7 yrs old)

I can see by the pic that the drawers are missing and/or damaged, you have different ways to address the drawer storage, and that is to build new ones or remove the bottom side piece, and create new storage with baskets. To change the look of this bed, I would add another MDF board to the bottom base and add caster wheels, so it's easy to move for cleaning or changing the layout of the furniture, just be sure at each corner the wheels can be locked for safety reasons.  Then I would decoupage the piece with floral design, which she would not outgrow, create a canopy on the ceiling along the wall which the non storage side is up against, making sure to extend it out to the opposite side of the bed, cover the mattress with a comforter and add lots of different sizes and types of pillow for along the side of the bed against the wall. Center the bed on that wall and a small round table on each end, install plug in wall lamps above the tables for task lighting. Pull the colors for the room from the florals in the decoupage. You can also add a decorative rug to give texture to the flooring. An adjustable height coffee table adjacent to the side of the bed, can be used for playing and a study area. Even though your daughter is only 7 now, you should design her room based on when she becomes a teenager.

I would take the bottom facing off and use dresser draws on wheels for pull out storage, paint it, go to the goodwill or flea market and find a cheap old dresser or chest, take the draws out paint the bed and draws put wheels on the draws... there you go

since your daughter is young, I think the first issue is safety. If the structure itself is sound (remember, she won't always be 7!) then I'd put baskets with colorful liners in each of the open compartments, or rebuild the drawers if the current look is what you want. Colorful (daughters fav?) paint and a little dust ruffle and you are good to go.

If you check out the site whatisblik.com, you'll find some great 'surface skins' which you could use to transform the plain wood. You can either replace the drawers with baskets or eliminate the rails and put drop-down fabric to conceal the holes and she can store bulkier toys, stuffed animals and games under there. I had a similar 'hole' problem in my bedroom and rigged up some bamboo place mats which I had mounted to heavy gauge cardboard and mounted inside the frame with Velcro mounts (easy to remove and clean). I used bamboo, but you could use any pattern.

There are many great ideas here but the most important thing is, your daughter is 7 and how long are you going to keep this bed. There were some good ideas for baskets and cutting out the bottom areas to incorporate those baskets. My concern is with the two middle uprights. are they for support or just used for the previous drawers. If they are NOT supports get rid of them and the bottom cross board, measure the area from headboard to foot board and get cardboard boxes and make 'baskets' with liners from those. There is a tutorial on Hometalk that gives instructions. They are really nice looking when done and will basically cost you nothing.Make 'Baskets' Out of Cardboard Boxes Good luck :)
