Hi Nicole! I love your Murphy bed! Treat it like you would paneling. Wash the surface, dry, then lightly sand and coat with primer before painting.
Yes you can paint it easily...I did the following my kitchen, bath, family room cabinets:
Clean, prime with Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 primer and then paint your finish coat. Your primer can be tinted the same color as your finish coat.

I agree! Clean, lightly sand to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with a good stain blocking primer. I like Kilz. Then paint your color. Seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane. I like Minwax.
