I have a Murphy bed that is laminated, can I paint it?

It's very light and supposed to look like blonde wood, it goes with none of our dark furniture, how can I change it? Is the compressed sawdust type fake wood so removing the laminate is not an option. Paint? Paneling? Chalk paint? We'd like to keep it.

Hi Nicole! I love your Murphy bed! Treat it like you would paneling. Wash the surface, dry, then lightly sand and coat with primer before painting.

  Your so welcome Nicole! If your painting you can get it clean with TSP. and water. Be sure it is completely dry before sanding. You could use a little hand sander to go over it lightly, if it has any shine to it at all. You want the material to be able to 'grab' the paint

Clean, prime with Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 primer and then paint your finish coat. Your primer can be tinted the same color as your finish coat.

I agree! Clean, lightly sand to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with a good stain blocking primer. I like Kilz. Then paint your color. Seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane. I like Minwax.
