I have a really old table that needs a refinish on top.

Is the table wood or veneer?

I would think you need to hand or machine sand the top while wearing a mask. Clean the old debris away first with a vacuum, then a rag, then a damp rag. Make any repairs to the tabletop like filling in gouges or damage to the wood using wood putty. Dry and sand those areas and again, vacuum, dry rag and damp rag clean. Then you can proceed with staining or painting, depending on your choice of finish. Painting may require a primer first. Staining goes on the bare wood. Let dry and then use some kind of clear protective coating for either painted or stained finishes. Good luck!

its wood and 100 years old. I want it look old just not as damaged as it was. I am sanding just the top as the legs and underneath parts are kind of the way I want it.
