Need ideas to update large plaster lamps!

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can bring these lamps in to 2018 from the 1990s? They are large, huge pastel colored plaster lamps with textured, porous surface. The lamp shades are a salmon/coral color. P.S. I have gotten so many wonderful and useful ideas from this site...love it!

Paint the base in a modern color with possibly spray paint for plaster and change out the old fashioned lampshade

Are they round, square or rectangle? Otherwise I would sand them smooth (with an electric sander) and either gold or silver leaf them afterwards. Craft store will have all materials. By leafing them and keeping them in a simple design, they will go with everything for a long time. When you get tired of that then paint a design on the lampshades.

Thank you Sharon, that sounds like the direction in which i was wanting to go! The lamps are circular, tapered at the bottom. I think I see gold and black strips for the shades. Thank you for the ideas!

WOW! Color scheme from the 70's. I would spray paint them with a metallic paints. If you plan for gold and black for the shades go with a charcoal or oil rubbed bronze finish and a speckled over spray of gold. Can't sand them smooth, but the texure will look amazing.

You can see why I wanted an update. Lamps are in excellent condition after all this time. Yours is another great idea for these lamps and shades. I can almost picture the update in my mind. Thank you for your time.

First, I think they need bigger shades. That will help. Then you could hot glue rope around the base. You could even use cloths line. Maybe glue your favorite "notions" randomly on it. A small seashell or old pieces of jewelry.

Thank you Rose, that's another really good idea! I have another project that I might use your tips on as I do like that effect. Another clever use for clothesline. Never would have thought of that. Thank you for your time!
