What Color to Paint?!

Happy Saturday folks! I have a fairly dark foyer with really no windows and minimal overhead lighting. I just got a console table that's the perfect size but am struggling a little bit with what color to paint it. I was thinking something light so it wouldn't look so heavy in the room. Our house is primarly muted grays, greens and blues.....
Here's the console table!

I have always loved Annie Sloan's Aubusson Blue. Here is a great example of a dresser done in the color. The refinisher painted the piece and lightly sanded the surfaces to lighten the color a bit. If you were to use this color I would suggest painting the inside your trim color to pull it together. I would keep the top of your table wood, front and side this blue, and the inside white. That combination would pop off your wall color and speak to the wall and wainscoting I see in the background. http://www.artsychicksrule.com/2012/11/aubusson-blue-dresser-re-do.html

HI! First I am going to say that you are going to find quite a few folks who are going to tell you not to paint this piece. But I am of the belief that you should do whatever makes it feel right for your space. That being said, I am seeing a darker blue/teal on the wall in the background of your photo. Perhaps choose a color that is in the same color palette but a much lighter tone? That will tie your piece with the adjacent space. Or, if you have another accent color near to this space, then use that to tie it all together.

We had the same problem, our entry was a brown and very dark. We had the entire area painted a beautiful "butter" colour and what a difference! BTW I love your Iron piece, we have several in our house.
  • ..I was thinking that a color such as Old Ochre ( sort of a creamy white color w a yellowish ( pale ) undertone. ..not really ' white' , not really yellow. )..I also like Sue's suggestion about a color, perhaps much lighter in tone , than the accent wall we see in your photo. And I would also paint the inside of your cabinet, and leave the top wood. That iron piece is gorgeous and will really look lovely once this console piece is ' lightened up ".

I like the wood just as it is

I also like Sue's suggestion. With the "vanilla" wall a creamy white color may lose the piece. All the best with your project!

Think this piece of furniture is beautiful and shows up well against your wall colour. It is also a different colour than your floor. If the piece were lighter, your wrought iron hanging might look too "heavy". Have you considered getting a small area rug for the area that picks up the colour of your wainscoting?

@Marion Nesbitt Hey Marion we did actually! The problem is the hallway is Suuuuuper long so we'd have to get a giant long rug for it not to look strange.

@Carolyn Your chest is gorgeous! I think her console would look great with this same color. Sounds like the color would fit with her other colors...just adding some depthy...ironpiece would look good above it as well...although I'd probably be looking for a mirror. The buttery/deep creamy color mentioned above does lighten and warm up any room. I used it in several areas of my own home. It seemed to work well with any color scheme while at the same time brightening and warming up each area. It's one of my favorite ways to bring in light.

I am looking at the blue and white wall/door? (not sure which) in the back of your photo, why don't you try and co-ordinate the same colours into the hall by painting the wall white and the dresser the same blue as the upper wall and when you feel like some more decorating ideas why not paint your staircase in white as well, all the paler tones would open up the whole area.... have fun.

Distressed turquoise would be my choice.

First I would hang the sculptural piece horizontal to add a sense of length and additional space. Perhaps taking the table lamp and hanging a small side sconce/chandelier In the background is a lower wall in white. To follow the theme, I suggest painting your console in White, I prefer, Reclaim by Country Living), then use a tone of glaze in a soft amber or hint of brown tone. This will bring all your elements of colors in. On the console you can adorn it with one or two of your favorite dishes to make a statement. Hope this helps. Enjoy your project.

I have a windowless entry way too. I put a huge mirror over a narrow antique table. Then added two tall lamps to each end. The hallway instantly visually doubled in size and the lamps add the light it needed. This will work no matter what colors you choose.

Have you ever considered dividing you suuuuuuper long hallway? Build a wall with a door framed in it to divide the hall into two separate areas. They could both be decorated differently with the back one coordinating with the room it is connected to. The front one similar but with it's own personality. A large mirror would magnify limited light.

I would suggest black crackle paint over a white base. I would change the blue wall to a black and white wallpaper of an oversized damask, or paint it using stencils in the same design.

I love the blue and white walls. Why not distress it white with the same blue undertones. It will brighten the area up and tie it all together. I tend to like things that coordinate.

I am about to make over a console entry cabinet in metallic paint after I saw this photo. I can see your beautiful piece in metallic paint as well. I can also envision putting mirrors in the doors with a small crystal knob on each. They would reflect light in that spot. Or, you could use some metal decorative grate sheets. You've probably already done something...I just noticed the dates on some of the suggestions!
