What do I need to do before I repaint my dining room chairs?

These chairs have previously been painted with a gloss enamel. I don't know if it was oil base, but I doubt it. They are a light cream color and I want to paint them stark white. Can I just clean them with TSP and get on with the job or do I have to actually work to get them ready for painting.

Clean them . Sand them too so that the new paint will have something to stick to and won't slide right off the current gloss. Wipe off the dust from the sanding and now you can paint .

Thanks. I was afraid that was going to be the answer. Was hoping there was going to be an easier way but, it looks like I will be spending the next few days sanding.
