I prime veneered furniture with BIN or Kilz primer, them follow up with my the latex color of choice.
Hey Debi! Unfortunately painting furniture isn't always easy. Even with the "easy" methods. You can totally do it though, just be prepared to take some time to do it.

Chalk paint along with wax is very easy. You may want to sand the wood in a section which is not visible to see how it looks. It may surprise you after the old finish is sanded off. Oak is a very beautiful wood.
