How can I achieve a welcoming look with paint colors for my home?

My house was built in 1908. It is not in the farmhouse stlye but not modern either. The wood work has never been painted, just varnished and I would like to keep it that way. I have accent walls painted now but want to go back to one color. Any suggestions. My furniture are in cherry and oak antiques, leather in chocolate browns. Any ideas? I like eclectic.

Sounds a little like our house which was built in 1905. All woodwork except in l.r. had been painted. We stripped the woodwork in l.r. and polyed it. Our l.r. is pale blue and all other rooms downstairs are white. They are small and our house is dark. We also furnish with antiques. Your house must have a style name. Ours is considered a four square or Colonial revival.

Hi, Judy. This project (in link below) really focused on converting to a French door, but I can't help but think of it as welcoming. I'm a fan of keeping old wood unpainted, so that gives you options to play with colors on those accent walls. I have a dream of some day restoring a house from the early 1900s like yours....hopefully someday!

A soft gold or a hint of beige. Put swatches of paint in different hues next to the wood to get ideas.
