How do I paint cloth?

What is the best way to paint the (off white) cloth seat cushion/pad on a kitchen chair? What type paint is recommended, and is there a need for any type of sealer?

you can get an additive at craft stores to add to your paint. the additive keeps the cloth pliable. if you use regular craft paint the paint may harden and flake off. the other option is to dye the seat cushions. about sealers....i'm an old fart. never saw any instructions on the labels as to the products needing "sealing".

Thank you for your advice. Perhaps sealers was not the correct word I was looking for.

The "additive" Dfm is talking about is called Textile Medium. Then you can use any acrylic paint as a fabric paint. Directions are on the bottle. Good luck!

Have you thought about Rit fabric dye?

I was just thinking that fabric paint would make your cushions stiff and when you sit on them, it would most likely crack the paint. That is the experience I have had with various fabric paints. I thought Rit dye would leave your fabric feeling comfy- like fabric. Not sure how your chairs are made, but there are options when leaving the cushions on like taping 1mm plastic paint drop cloth around the base. Again, don't know how your chairs are made. But I do highly suggest you check out the Rit site and see if someone else has asked this question. I have found tons of ideas on their site that I never expected. You also might try asking at a fabric store, especially one that sold upholstery cloth. Most of those ladies who have been there for a while are fabric encyclopedias! Anyway, I wish you the very best of luck!
