Give the wood a smooth sanding, put on a good primer, then use the paint of your choice. Putting on a clear coat of poly after always helps.

    Dear Mildred,

I know just what you mean! It's hard to dig in to a project even when you know you want to do it. Whether it's fear, mitivation

If you do use chalk paint, you don't need to prime, but you should apply polyurethane or polycrylic if the area will have heavy use. There are videos on Youtube, like this one of a cabinet makeover: https://youtu.be/25vNMDwLWuY

With most chalk paint projects you don't need to sand before painting unless the wood is in poor shape or you want to. Then a wipe on wax finish or product of choice and it's done. I haven't had durability issues

just finished 2 dining room cabinets, a shelf and 8 chairs. They didn't all match. I wanted a rustic farmhouse look. I wiped down all pieces first, painted 2 coats of chalk paint, sanded in random wear areas and finished with butchers wax. No chalky residue comes off. I also changed the hardware. They look fantastic.
