In case you DO have a pile rug, spray paint is still your friend. I used to detail cars and often had some come in that needed a spot covered on the carpet that would not wash out. Clean and dry the rug well, then spray a light coat of paint on the rug, let sit for about 2 minutes, then brush lightly with a soft brush. This keeps the rug from getting stiff.
