I would replace the countertop with something more modern and use one of the colors in the countertop to paint the wood trim to match.. White cabinets are still in good condition, so I'd keep the white.
I don't see a photo but the usual is to repaint or stain and change the knobs to modern ones

I used chalk paint.
Let me start by saying that this project is extremely time consuming due to the drying time of the varies applications BUT I LOVE the end result. I just recently painted my white laminate kitchen cabinets with oak trim on the top and the bottom. After researching for a year I did the following: Washed them with a degreaser spray cleaner - let air dry - removed cabinet doors - lightly sanded - applied 2 coats Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 - Then applied Valspar Reserve in a light gray (2 coats) - then Minwax water based in Satin (I did not want a high gloss but didn't want a flat look either). I did the exact process on the frames after the cabinet doors were removed :) VERY IMPORTANT TO LET ALL COATS OF Zinsser/Paint/Minwax DRY DRY DRY in between applications!!! ALSO -- USE A FOAM ROLLER TO ALLEVIATE ANY BRUSH MARKS!! I then drilled holes for the new hardware since as you can see from the pictures below (like your cabinets) there was no hardware. I have 3 older children (2 who are early 20 boys and are NOT dainty in the kitchen!) , a hubby and an 8 month old living in this home and the kitchen (as you can imagine) gets a lot of usage on a daily basis. Thus far the cabinets are holding up extremely well, even when spills and drips occur they wipe off the cabinets well with a damp sponge. PLEASE do not judge the mess in the cabinets..... I did organize and clean as I was waiting for dry time :)
CLEAN WITH TSP. THEN RINSE WELL. CHALK PAINT. CHALK PAINT X2 THEN HIGH GLOSS SEALER. Make sure you paint out the wood (look) portion. With the disappearance of the wood it will look so much more today. You REALLY want to loose the wood! that is what dates it so badly. The high gloss will keep it looking good much longer. I always dry twice as long as I think it needs. A cheap job can be a great job!

You could add trim around the other sides to give them a Shaker look. And then paint. We did that to our same cabinets and then added beadboard panels to the middle. Painted and put handles on.
We think this is a huge improvement over what it looked like before.

Could you just paint the wood? You could get it color matched to the white laminate.
I agree with Rymea. I have painted kitchen cabinets many times, and it is a big undertaking. My friend sold her condo a couple of years ago, with the same European style cabinets as yours. She just painted the wood trim, and added hardware vertically on the doors. You didn't even notice the trim, and the kitchen looked modern. You don't even have to add the hardware, if you want a more minimalistic look. Just paint the trim, and see if you like it. You can always paint the rest later. It is amazing sometimes how small changes can make a huge difference.
You could paint the cabinet trim black. Paint a stripe of black just under upper cabinets. Eliminate the frilly curtain and maybe just a black gingham valence across the top, not necessarily gathered. But straight across. Paint the paper towel holder black as well. Get some small Command hook to get the wires out of the way, and some black and white towels (hang one on your dishwasher handle).
