not sure maybe a acrylic water base, and then put a sealer over it, just an idea, not quite sure though, so I think you would be best consulting with a stone store, and ask them.
My kids did this on the outside of their house. Ugly real stone. They white washed it with diluted white latex exterior paint. Several coats till they got what they liked. The stone still shows thru but it did not match their house. They practiced on the fireplace stone because they were tearing it out. They did not seal it. If it fades over time they can add another coat. Very simple and cheaper than tearing it out.
I painted with chalk paint that I watered down. It was approximately 1 cup white chalk paint to 4 cups water. I painted the rocks and grout with a chip brush (it was runny) and then wiped off any excess. Here are the before and after pictures. This was a very easy and quick project.
