https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkEz72VHbGo you could also mix your own chalk paint you'd need to seal it or this chalk/laquer would workhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGBrEk6gM1I My opinion you should leave it like it is.

Real slate? Please don't that. Slate is a valuable material. You will ruin the floor and downgrade your property value. Anyway, the paint won't wear well due to its natural clefs, and chip a lot. Will be impossible to take back. Just clean and polish it, a beautiful natural stone floor.

I agree Kelli. Under normal circumstances I would leave it, however its very dated looking, and an ugly brown color. Wish they had installed black slate instead.

Painting slate tile requires more work than other surfaces because it has a non-porous surface. But, it can be done! You will need to follow several steps. The first thing to do is to clean the tile with a water-bleach solution. Allow to dry.

Second, check for uneven spots and sand them down. If there are deep areas you will need to fill with an epoxy sealant for tile. It's best to go ahead and to cover all the tile with the sealant if you do find you need it. Next, apply painter's caulk to the tile surface in a thin coat - you want it to be even. Next, prime the tile with Primer paint. After the primer dries apply your first coat of paint, You will want to apply at least two to three coats of paint, perhaps even more depending upon how opaque you want your tile to be. Finally, cover the surface with a water based sealant. It is good to apply at least two coats of the sealant. Good luck!

Wende. Is it a very large area? Could you just replace? Or I never tried this but since slate is very porous, I'd do a test paint in a closet or corner of just using satin oil based paint. It's very durable and will soak into the slate. Don't add a top coat, will peel.
