Do we continue the same ceiling texture & paint in the kitchen

My house was built in 1982, the kitchen and family room are one room. The family room has popcorn ceiling, which we are removing soon, and the kitchen has the florescent lighting box, that we are replacing with canned lights. The ceiling is painted with gloss paint, I guess to give the room a separate look.

My kitchen and living room are all one room also. I treat them as one large room -- same color walls, same flooring and same popcorn ceiling (sorry, I'm 76 and I'm not going to go through removing it although a smooth ceiling would be very nice). They both have ceiling fans with lights -- kinda retro, but I can live with it. The living room ceiling light is almost never used. Good luck with your project!

  • Totally a matter of personal preference, but I would treat the ceiling as one room, just for continuity.

  • Up to you really, do you want to keep it like one space or separate into two different looks?

I would keep an even flow by doing the ceilings the same.

It would look best to keep the ceilings the same.

Treat it as one large room, definitely. Also, not sure if houses built in '82 could have asbestos in the popcorn ceilings, but please have it tested before you remove it.
