Painted paneling gives a great beachy look. Make sure you clean the paneling thoroughly, then use 1-2 coats of Kilz as a primer. Then paint as you would normally. Depending on the grooves in the paneling, you may be able to get by with a thick napped roller. If this isn't painting inside the grooves, use a brush on the first, then roll.
You can fill the grooves with drywall patching compound. Let it dry overnight. Next day go over the groove patch with a damp sponge to smooth them out. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser123 or BIN. Then paint with your color.
