Use a good primer for the bathroom such as zinser to kilz.

defiantly use a primer, i would also take a fine grit sand paper and give it a once over before the primer or use a commercial liquid sand paper de glossing agent.

sand and use a primer that is good for oil or water based paints. The newer paints do not do well with liquid sand paper so it is all elbow grease good luck i have learned these all the hard way DIY

Hi @Merrill, I use liquid sandpaper all the time. Are you wiping it off with a damp rag and letting the surface dry thoroughly? I always use a cheapy hardware store brand.

Am getting ready to paint some old beadboard that is same. Am going to run my hand sander over it before I prime.

I agree with dfm - sand lightly to raise the grain then use a good primer like Zinsser. It gives the paint something to grab on to.

Sand it lightly and then use a semi-gloss paint. Never use flat pait in a bathroom.
