We used Behr paint on our wood paneling in our closet makeover and it was easy to apply because the primer was built in. We did have to do about 2-3 coats though!

Be sure to use a primer or a paint with primer in it as Lindsay mentioned
Primer or kiltz it first
Prime first with Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 primer tinted the same color as your finish coat. Then apply your final coat/coats. If you tint the primer you may get away with only one final coat as the primer helps it to cover better.
I would use General Fibshes’ milk paint. Only minimal prep work is required. They have a stain blocker primer that you apply first for dark wood. You can see the steps I used here: http://momhomeguide.com/my-painted-kitchen-cabinets-a-year-later/
