How does one paint a canvas ceiling?

We have an old home with canvas ceilings and would love to paint them, but we have no clue on the process to do so. In one room the canvas ceiling has had water damage which although the staining look is unique needs to be covered.
Appreciate any helpful suggestions and tips on painting the ceiling.

First paint over stain with STAIN BLOCK available from DIY's When dry use a roller to paint the ceilings unless you are handy with the new type Paint sprayers.................................Or you could ask a Painter and decorator to give you a price to do the job, and at the sametime ask him/her how they would plan to tackle it! -
