How to paint a ceramic tile floor?

Can I paint a ceramic tile floor? Ours is old, not in bad shape, but out of date and does not go with the wall tiles. Not sure why predecessors did this. Can you give me some advice on what we could do? Tear it up??

The tile I have is made of geometrical pieces that make up a pattern. They are not smooth. Maybe I will tear them up. They are in very good shape for their age. I hate to destroy them. Ha ha! Thanks all for your effort to help me. One of the links has a lot of suggestions. Will need to consider the viable ones for our tiles. Thank you very much!
