How to paint paneling?
I have a light colored wood paneling about 24 years old in the basement. Which would be better, paint the paneling or remove it and replace it with sheet rock and then paint?

That's up to you. If you like the texture keep it, if not drywall.
Painted paneling will always look like painted paneling but I would go for it. If you feel it's the idea of paneling you are tired of then I think you should take it down and put the dry wall up. Painting is easier and faster.
The cheapest and least work would be to paint the paneling. My husband drug his feet too long and I tore the paneling down. He spent the next week (his vacation) hanging drywall and cursing a blue streak. Turned out beautiful, but he didn't speak to me for a week after that. Lesson learned lol.
Hi, it is way less work to paint the paneling. You just need to prime it first, and then paint, it will really brighten up the room(s)

I’d paint! Use a deglosser and coat of primer for best adhesion.
