Primer is a must if you want a smooth even finish. The finished result is all about the prep. The primer closes all the pores in the wood. If primer is not used it will result in color variations in the paint..not different colors but light and dark areas. If you decide to stain, use a wood conditioner on new wood..it helps conceal imperfections in the wood that will come out when stained.

Use a primer, it will keep the areas of wood uniform because wood is porous and will absorb the paint to different degrees, giving you a noticeable unevenness in light/dark areas.
