I take it you're not a Bronco's fan or you'd be painting a room those colors. I found an answer for you on HoDe's website answered by one of their clerks. By my experience he's right on. http://community.homedepot.com/t5/Paint/How-do-I-effectively-cover-dark-bright-colored-paint/td-p/4381#.Ut9KkLTnbGg
  • Make sure the wall is clean from dust and grime. Usually wiping down walls works in living spaces. Zinsser primer works well and can be tinted to help cover for your top coat. The trick to painting is not overdoing the paint on the roller and brush! Gobbing it on too thick will cause runs and give you a bad finish. Paint and primer is great~I use either Valspar or Behr depending upon sales. Both will provide coverage and will take at least 2 coats for the best coverage. If you are going lighter, you will need at least 2 if not 3 coats. In my experience, I have used Valspar paint and primer without priming over dark wall and had excellent results going with a neutral wall. What I would do- paint a patch with your paint to see what coverage you get and if the paint/primer cannot cover after 2 coats, then prime first. Good luck.

We had a dark blue navy wall. We used kilz primer tinted. Then we painted with a light green. It worked very well. I also do very much agree with C Renee Fuller. Happy painting.

Kilz or use a paint with primer in it and plan on painting a few coats. I use paint from Lowes

Do yourself a big favor and put on a primer! Those paints with primers are not what they are advertised to be! We found out the hard way that it takes a lot more paint and they just do not do the job in one coat! If you have to put on 2 coats, make one of them a primer...we always use Kilz! I want to paint over gold and yellow is one of the hardest colors to cover and will bleed through...keep in mind that orange has yellow in it!.

Two coats of Behr paint any color I really like Behr, however I do not recommend the primmer combo. I find it best to put on two coats of regular paint

ok, I wanted to send an update on my dilemma, I bought BEHR with primer, and it covered the dark colors wonderfully! Could almost have done it with one coat, but did need to go over a few areas with a second coat. Beautiful!
