If it's in your home and you dislike it then you should either rip it out or paint it. Why keep something you don't like on the off chance it's going to be trendy in the future? Are you planning to start liking it just because it's in style?

Fill grooves with filler, sand after dry. Undercoat, paint.

You could bleach/lighten it instead of painting it. I always think painting wood is a mistake because it will peel and flake, then you will have to scrape and keep painting it the rest of your life.

Most likely not unless you want a cabin look.

I painted the dark paneling in my family room when I moved into my house. It's the same color as the adjoining rooms, but the panel grooves give the room a more casual look. And if you don't like it, you can always smooth the surface by filling in the grooves and repainting, or ripping out the paneling altogether.
