my late husband and painted ours; rough up the surface with light sand paper and follow with the allow to dry over dampened pieces of old sheets -

paint, stencils, even wallpaper, for papering fill in open areas with drywall cement or use a liner. Faux painting technics are good also -

I've seen some really cool white washed paneling. Definitely freshens up a room!
