If you use a clay pot sealer 1st, then a water based acrilic paint works great.
You can use acrylic craft paint, just be sure to seal them.
Almost any paint will work, but I like to use spray paint because it comes in so many colors.
Try acrylic paint sometimes labaled as patio paint
Exterior house paint will work. You can purchase samples, which are about 8 ounce, or quarts. That would give you the largest variety of colors to choose from. Just be sure to seal the inside. Moisture will cause any paint to peal off.
I've used everything from spray paint to acrylic craft paint to even house paint. Just make sure to seal the pots well, both inside and out.
Give the pots a base coat then a coat of acrylic, a second coat may be needed if the clay soaks up a lot of paint. Finish it with a clear acrylic spray to protect the finish.
