I think a gel stain is your best bet.

I always use exterior paint on my kitchen cabinets. No chips, seldom holds stain, (never for me) easy cleaning and last years.

Lowes and Home Depot sell a cabinet paint that works really well. It goes on smooth and dries hard like a painted cabinet. It might be called "cabinet repair" or something like that. Anyone in the paint section should be able to help you.

Make sure they are clean and dry. Use acrylic latex paint. Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

I'm a big fan of CHalk paint! It adheres beautifully!
