The first thing I do is vacuum or wipe the walls and ceiling down to get any dust webs off. Remove all the things on the walls, and the light switch and outlet covers. Then I fill any nails holes with spackle, or drywall compound. You apply this using a putty knife. Let this dry and sand to blend in if need be. Then I prime the spots I spackled. Put down drop clothes on the floor or any furniture you don't want to get paint on. The first thing you paint is the ceiling, and trim the ceiling out. Then I paint the walls and trim those out. Some people do the trim painting first but I like to do it last. Make sure you purchase a good roller and paint brush. It is worth the extra money. I use a 1" - 1.5" brush for the trim work. For the roller they have different naps. You pick this from how texture your walls are. The packaging will say for what texture it is for. Some people also tape off any molding before they paint. I find it easier for me to trim free hand without taping anything. I always have a damp rag incase I get paint on something that I shouldn't. Another great tip is if you don't get it done in one day you can put your paint tray, roller, and brushes in plastic bags. This stops the paint from drying out and it will be good to use the next day. Use good bags with no holes so air doesn't get in. Happy painting. It is so rewarding once it is completed.

Hi Klg, This is a really good how to video! She doesn't talk about the ceiling, but you'll want to paint it first. If you have trim along the ceiling, make sure to tape it off first. http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/skills-and-know-how/painting/how-to-paint-a-room

    Good luck!

ceiling first. use Kilz on stains. if the ceiling is pop corn, don't saturate the roller. better to use two light coats that have chunks falling off.

Trim in the corners of the ceiling 1 to 2 coats as needed. Then- paint the ceiling first 1 to 2 coats as needed. Then you have to trim all the corners of the walls from ceiling to floor. Then us a roller depending on how smooth or textured you want the walls. This will determine the ( nap ) its called of the roller head you buy? Ask the person at the paint desk of the home improvement store you buy your supplies .They will help you. Then when the corners of the walls and around the floor molding is done paint the walls. Good angled Paint brush good roller head paint tray and tray liners to just throw away, and a small handled container for trimming, drop cloth.
