White kitchen cabinets with a plastic finish- advice on type of paint?
from the 1980's. Does anyone know of a paint that will work on these?
I used a Behr alkyd paint for my bathroom cabinets and they came up beautifully. It acts like an oil paint but it's latex. The only downside is that it takes a long time to dry between coats (about 4 hours) but it's easy to apply. I redid my kitchen cabinets a few years ago with the Rustoleom products but they haven't held up very well and they were much more labor intensive. Thinking of redoing my kitchen with the alkyd paint as well.
Sherwin Williams makes a paint and primer in one for kitchen cabinets. Just be sure to wash cabinets first well with a degreaser like TSP.
Zinsser 123 water based and Zinnser Stain Cover oil based primers seem to be on top. Benjamin Moore Advance Paint.
Make sure they are clean and dry. Use acrylic latex paint. Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.
Zinser is the best!
