Use a 2.5 inch angled brush of very good quality. Load a lot of paint in the brush without going past half way up the bristles. Turn the brush parallel to the trim. With a long even stroke, draw the brush across the length of the trim. The bristles should spread so that the edges of the bristles follow your trim. This sounds cliche, but it's really all in the wrist. I've painted a lot of trim without using any tape like this. Practice....
