I have the attic system. I live in SoCal and have no mold issues at all with it. We have very low humidity though. As far as the cooling, it is great! It is also cost efficient for us.

I live in East-central Canada and many of my neighbours have the 2-in-1 minisplit ductless (heat and cold). Our summers are quite humid. The only thing I have noticed, is that one doesn't seem to be enough for 800-100 sq. feet, since they all have 2 through-the-wall ones.

I have installed and retrofitted hundreds of AC systems in my time. A lot of retrofits are based on budget. I've installed attic systems, basement systems, high velocity systems, and ductless systems. The cheapest would be an attic systems as there are less obstructions to contend with when running the ductwork. Basement systems would be second. There would be obstructions that require a work around and second level hookups are a bear. High velocity systems would be placed in the attic and have smaller diameter ducts run to the living area. They tend to pressurize the home hence the high velocity. They work efficiently for tightly insulated homes. Ductless systems tend to be the most expensive. They utilize no ductwork as a unit hangs on a wall or ceiling in a room and the refrigerant lines go through a wall to the outside condenser. Depending on the homes construction may need two+ units. Open space plans would require less units. Of course each bedroom would require its own unit. Advantage is each room can be regulated individually. Usually two room units can be connected to one outdoor condenser.

Never seen any mold with attic installs. There is no moisture for mold to grow from the install. The systems are sealed systems, all ductwork is taped and insulated. None of the circulating air comes in contact with the attic air.
