use a finer grit and slower speed to start then increase speed
You need to start with a coarse grit sandpaper and gradually go to a finer grit. Start with 100 grit end with 200 grit and sometimes finer. Don't force the sanding. Let the sander do the job. Keep the sander moving. Just to smooth out surface use a fine grit sandpaper like 200 grit. Skipping grits will just make more work for yourself.
In addition to Louis' recommendation, keep the sander in motion (not in one spot), after pressing the stop button, until sander's motion is completely finished, or remove sander from floor contact before pressing stop button.
Here is a video on how to fix that problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLOsIw__H0E
Start with a high grit (80) and work your way to a lower grit (220). Work with the grain. Make sure your sandpaper is new and unblemished.
