Hi Julie. They sell a chimney balloon, or a fireplace plug that you can use to help keep the draft out. You can find these at Home Depot. Good Luck!
Here are some thoughts on it. My best to you as you get a nice warm place!!
Listed are some ideas such as "blankets" for the opening. If you are on a tight budget, you may even just cover over with a couple of garbage bags and cover with a piece of plywood shaped to cover the hole. My sister and her husband did that with an old fireplace to keep out the cold. Place an insulated blanket, we used just an old window, and I had placed a pretty candelabra "log" behind it in front of the fireplace with some greenery, then placed the window in front of that. You can see that idea on Pinterest listed below.. There are many great inexpensive ways to keep you warm from getting drafts off the fireplace. Good luck to you!!

If you want to cover with inexpensive "tin" check it out at Home Depot. Explain to the helpful people there what you are trying to do, and that it is a rental, I am sure they can help you greatly too!!!
I recently bought a black foam poster board at Dollar Tree for $1. It slips behind the opening almost perfectly. It can't be seen behind the black mesh screen, either. It's kept our home much warmer this winter and hopefully, cooler this summer.
I've read that you can use foam insulation board.
I would focus on stopping air flow at both the spark arrest or (top outside) and the firebox opening.
Ann’s sheet foam idea is easy to cut and adhere with the Specified adhesive.
