How to hide thick pipe and make it look like a column?

I have a thick pipe coming down the center of a rec room in the house. How can I hide it so it looks like a pillar or column? What materials should I use to cover it? Wood or drywall?

Hi Mary, I would use wood and build a box around it. You would just need 4 boards the height of the pillar and then build the box right around the pillar. You could then finish the top and bottom with molding to give it a clean look. With the wood up, you could paint or stain it to match your decor then.
You can definitely hide it like a column or pillar. Wood would be easier and more durable than dry wall. Check out how we hid a pillar with wood in the first steps of this project we did: https://www.frugalfamilytimes.com/2020/07/hidden-storage-under-stairs-diy-basement-railing/
Add a base around the bottom and top, then frame with plywood. After that you can finish with the wood look or add sheet rock, depending on what you decide is your most liked look.

You can box it in and add decorative trim to make it look like a column. You could also box it in and turn the front of it into a tall storage or display shelf.
You could build a box around it with wood or there are also column kits that fit around issues like this.
Hello Mary.
Make a frame around it using timber and then clad it with the drywall!
Hello commonly we’ve had a boxed frame around our basement supports. It could be your own preference whether it is wood or drywall-or stained or painted.
Hi, Maybe just paint it or make it look like Marble etc. or box it in with timber and then decorate as required.
