I've always just used a thin blade or tool to pry them out. You may have a little damage, but you're going to spackle the holes any way. Good luck.

Place a flat blade screwdriver across the opening of the drywall anchor. Make sure the head of the screwdriver is wider than the screw hole in the anchor. Tap the end of the screwdriver with a hammer to push the anchor all the way to the wall. Keep tapping until the anchor falls down behind the drywall.

Those usually pry right put with a screwdriver or you can put a screw partway in and then just pull them out of the wall.

Kate, see my posting below with the picture that shows why trying to remove the anchor by unscrewing the screw does not work.

Dee has it right. Once they are fully in the wall you can cover the hole with plaster. Once dried, sand it out and it will be smooth and ready to paint again! Good luck

The finish on your wall is stippled, not smooth drywall. If you fill in the holes made when you try to punch the anchors in, sand smooth, and paint over them, the spots will still be visible against the stippling, as they will be different texture. The only way to get the spots fully invisible is to repaint the entire area using the same gauge of stippling as the rest of the wall was finished with.

Those can't be removed. They expand in the wall behind the drywall when a screw is screwed in. Best solution is to use a screwdriver and knock them into the wall. Then just patch the hole with drywall patching compound. Use the tip of a paint brush to stipple the compound to get the texture.

Yes, William is right; these anchors cannot be removed. For anyone who may be unfamiliar with this style of drywall anchor, here is cross picture of what they look like installed. The picture shows that even when the screw is removed, the casing continues to remain attached to the wallboard.
