What's the easiest way to remove wallpaper from drywall so I can paint

It may be easier to paint the wall paper. Steaming the paper and peeling it off is the best results that I personally have had. It’s a tough job.

The easiest way is to have someone else do it.

That said, here are a few ways to do it:

1. pull off everything that is loose.

2. score the wallpaper with a utility knife; light scratches are fine because all you want to do is expose the underside of the wallpaper to the water you are going to introduce.

3. use warm water, a sponge and start in one area by wetting the paper and then scraping with a putty knife

You can purchase a adhesive solvent in the wallpaper section of the big box store or a spray-on solvent. Mostly it's score, wet, scrape.

Or you can rent a steamer from one of the local hardware stores and use that to help along the process.

In all cases, it's really about scoring, wetting (or steaming) and scraping.

A steamer (you can rent or buy - or borrow) is the best and easiest method I've found.

Hello Zauck! Here is some really useful information about removing wallpaper from drywall -- particularly if it is unprimed drywall! Read through the article, but also know that primer and paint can be applied directly onto wallpaper, too, as long as it has been lughtly sanded for better adherence followed by a good wipe down to remove any dusty residue. Then apply oil-based primer and oil-based paint. Not water-based. Water-based will reactivate the glue and cause the wallpaper to peel.

I had the best luck removing wallpaper by scoring it first, then spraying it down with a mixture of Fabric Softener and Hot Water. (About 25% softener to 75% hot water.) Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, spraying again about half-way through. The wallpaper came of quickly and easily for me with this method —and NO smelly commercial paper remover! Good luck!
