How do I stop plush fabric from shedding and pilling?

  • What kind of fabric? are you washing it? drying it? I do not dry most of my clothes especially if they are any blends, even cotton, or anything that can 'pill up' or shrink. I also have front loader that I wash any delicate clothes in because the agitation can cause the fabric to become twisted, torn, or 'pilled'. So my recommendation is not wash on delicate cycle if you do not have a front loader and do not dry in dryer.

I turn my tops and blue jeans inside out to prevent pilling and fading. What do you mean by "plush" fabric? Velvet? Fleece? I believe velvet is almost always all cotton and years ago we only dry cleaned it. Fleece is a synthetic and can be washed and dried on a delicate cycle. If you are sewing, you might try what is known as pinking shears. Pinked edges usually don't fray as much.

Hello Kaye, I do not know what to do with the shredding, but I do have a cordless electric fabric groomer. It works wonderful on pilling of material whether it is on a sweater or other material. It brings things back to life like new. I have a blog called Spark Of Craft on blogger if you would like to see what the hand groomer looks like. I also showed a before and after of an old quilt that had pills in it and how it made the quilt nice and smooth per say again. I also would like to mention that if you have a Job Lot store in your area they might have them at this store. I know around Christmas time I happened to see them their. If not you might be able to check on line to see who sells them. The one who made mine was distributed by; Venture Horizon Corp. Santa Barbara California. I hope this helps. :).

Like Sandra, have never found a way to stop shedding but I also use a fabric shaver. They are very inexpensive at Bed Bath and Beyond. It doesn't take much time to shave the little pills off of them.

Good to know Joan, that they have them at Bed Bath and Beyond. I would think they would be good to give someone as a gift too. :).
