How do I prevent further water damage around my kitchen sink?
The hole for my drop-in kitchen sink was made a little too wide in places, so water falls through the slits to the cabinet below. He also left deep gouges in the new countertop, on the right side, close to the backsplash area. Was thinking of using a silicone caulk to seal the gaps. Is there a better way to fix this? Can't afford to replace that run of countertop. Don't want any water damage to continue. (Was told it was a "pipe leak". He's been fired.)

I suggest to use clear caulking around the sink. It all depends on how big of a gap your talking about.
Demand he pay for proper repair, and consider taking him to Small Claims Court if he won't pay.
You will need some kind of a backer under the counter top or the caulk will fall through.
Also consider placing stick on floor tiles onto the shelves in the cabinet. They are cheap, easy to cut and protect the shelf from water damage, leaks and spills.
