I have an antique rolltop desk and to take the top off I climb underneath and the screws go from the bottom up into the top. Remove the screws lift the top straight up. Then you can remove the crossbars to easily move each side separately.
The "roll" top fits into deep groves on each side.. allowing them to move back and forth... think of a rolling garage door and you get the idea. The desk was probably constructed in two pieces... the bottom and the top... look from underneath and see if you can find the screws that attack the two parts... remove the top and the roll top will come out of the channel

Take off the top and then the roller part will be exposed and easily removed.
