Depends on what is causing the wood to crack. Is it cracking along a grain line? A photo would be very helpful. Can't give you an educated answer without a picture.

You will need access to some sawdust (the finer the better). Mix the sawdust with wood glue to make a paste. Use wood glue that will allow you to paint or stain after it drys. Once you have made your paste, clean the surface where the crack is, along both sides of it. Use a small putty knife to fill the crack with your paste. Push it into the crack smoothing it as you go along. Once the crack is filled, allow it to dry for at least 24 hours. Lightly sand, stain/paint and varnish if that is how the finish is protected. I have an antique table out of an old mine in Idaho. It is well over 100 years old. It had the same cracks. My dad and I made this paste with pine sawdust. Filled the cracks, let it dry, sanded, stained and varnished the hole table. This was 25-30 years ago. The glue in the crack still remains. Good luck

there is a product on the market called QuikWood, it is a two part polymer epoxy product that once combined make a clay that can be used to fill in cracks.. it sets up in 20 to 30 minutes & is hard[ or in some cases harder] than the wood itself. It can be painted, but does not take stain real well. It was invented by a cabinet maker & is really strong...good luck..
