How to fix my couch's broken springs

Yvette
by Yvette
The springs on my couch have popped out of place. They have not sunk they are kind of sticking up so our cushions can not lay flat. The springs have not broken the fabric but we can no longer sit on our couch. I would really like to fix it if I can. Any suggestions?

Springs have to be retied. An upholsterer can do this for you and then restitch the cover or put on a new one. Or if you are brave, google "How do you retie springs in a sofa" and there are several posts! Good luck!

You have to turn the couch ever and start to dismantle it as it sounds as if the webbing that held the springs in place has rotted or broken and will need Not a job for you, then call in a professional.

Get a piece of plywood cut to fit your couch and place it under the cushions on top of the springs. It will help lift up the springs and suppor the cushions when you sit on it.

i agree with Cindy, works great and a lot cheaper than calling in a professional.

Putting a board under the cushions is not fixing the problem, it's only covering up the problem. And besides, the rising springs are not going to let the board and cushions lie flat. I would try to retie the springs myself and if I couldn't, I would hire a professional if I thought the couch was worth the money. If I felt the couch wasn't worth the cost of repairs I would pitch it in the garbage, but save the cushions for future projects. Then I would go to the Restore and buy a second hand couch at an unbelievable great price.

First : check that all the springs are not broken. If they are all whole and it’s only the tying the has failed, it could be done without tremendous expense. If springs are cracked, broken or distorted and mangled - that’s for professionals to handle.

If you choose to re-tie the springs, measure the height of the springs that are still intact and use that measure as a guide so you end with an even surface. The best quality springs use an eight way tie to secure each spring. You can find directions online. If the existing springs that haven’t sprung aren’t as secure, this is the time to fix them too. Check the condition of the framework - spring springs may not be the only problem that needs work.

Good luck on repairing your couch.

re-tie of springs is hard work, and very hard on your hands

it can be done But really a task

probably best left to an upholster

unfortunately this work can be expensive

get bids then decide if worth your money, maybe better to purchase new sofa

      good luck
