The top of a dresser has a rabbet cut into it on each side that the sides of the chest slip into. The sides are glued and sometimes stapled to the top. The back panel is usually stapled to the top. With a little care, the top can be cut from the side panels after removing the staples from the back panel. Sometimes it can be hammered off the side panels by using a piece of 2X4 under the top lip and gently hitting it up with a hammer. Is there a reason you want to replace the top rather than repair it, which would be easier.

I have refurbished a couple of pieces with damaged tops. Yep, fill them then paint. I painted the tops of some blue dressers black. After the black latex was good and dry( I waited a couple of days) I applied two coats of semi-gloss oil base polyurethane to seal and protect. I did an end table with this method 25 years ago- it survived the kids years and still looked great when I sold it a couple of months ago....... I would recommend sealing your piece because it will be in the bath. You can use a mat finish too. Latex polyurethane has not held up well for me. Good luck!

What is it's shape? Square corners? Straight sides? What are you wanting to replace it with?
