You could have a board cut in a circle to fit in the top and then, if you're crafty, do a tile mosaic. I personally would go the other direction and order a new top or table. If you're keeping it outdoors, my opinion would be to replace it with a product you're sure can withstand the elements.

I would replace it with wood. You can stain, tile, paint, decoupage, Mod Podge, Unicorn Spit, etc., it. Post what you do here with photos. Good luck.

I had this situation and cut piece of wood to fit the table frame, but first I covered the wood with vinyl, like you see on card tables. It is waterproof and was pretty easy to do.

You could order a piece of clear acrylic / plexiglass which looks like glass but it way easier to cut and cheaper - comes in various thicknesses and would do the job - also safer as it won't break or shatter.

If you use acrylic or Plexi a wee tip to keep it scratch free is to use a car wax on it once a month after cleaning! Water beads very well too.

I like the idea of the Plexiglass but if you go to a mirror and glass store, they can give you some ideas on what kind of glass they could replace it with. We just replace a shattered patio table top with another piece of glass.

I've never done it myself but I have seen outdoor table tops made from plywood with ceramic Mosaic tiles as the surface. An inexpensive source for the tile would be a recycling center like Habitat for Humanity ReStore or another architectural salvage store. Following directions easily available on YouTube or online tutorials use thinset mortar to place the tiles on the surface then grout for a watertight surface. You should seal the tile grout. To get the variety of sizes and shapes you would need if you are comfortable with a glass cutter you could score and break the tiles or simply cover them with newspaper and break them with something heavy to get the size and shapes you want. I am thinking of doing this with the existing glass top for my outdoor table because it was badly damaged with the surface scratched and not repairable. Of course you will want to wear safety goggles and perhaps gloves when you handle the broken tiles. Use normal precautions and make sure the children aren't around when you are working on it.

First tape the crack so it will not expand. 2. get two pieces of wood, top and bottom of hole and screw them together. Finish off the top piece to look like a tried or cutting board. Seal them with an outdoor poly acrylic (varathane). You may want to caulk them if you think you will get water run-in.

Thrift stores have a lot of items like that
  • You can go to a store that sells acrylic panels. Have the measurements with you. They can cut it out for you custom. You can also choose to go with clear or colored acrylic. It's not as expensive as you might think. Definitely less than glass and sturdier.
