I assume you only need this for a while when the kids are little and prone to falling. You can use the noodles and cut a slit or buy some pipe insulation - it already is slit. Open the foam and put a few dabs of hot glue on the edge to hold the foam in place. It won't leave a mess when you remove them.

I have seen special pads for protecting toddlers, used for fireplace hearths....might google it. When our grands were little, we bought some foam, covered it with an afgan or throw and lay it on the hearth...worked for us.
