Repairing a laminate table top

by Donna
I love this table but the top is veneer it laminate and has begun chipping. Also there is a white spot where it scorched from a hot bowl through a trivet. Is there anyway to salvage the table as it isn't solid wood and can't be refinished by sanding etc.? Thanks!

You can absolutely save this table. Veneer can be painted. I have done it dozens of times. Fill in the chips & dins with wood putty & sand smooth. Talk to your paint professional & get a bonding primer. I use a liquid sandpaper first, bonding primer, & then paint. Your prep is the key to making your paint stick. Best of luck!

I just attended a seminar with a company that I am a retailer for. The product is fantastic. It is a texture casting product that has multiple uses. I would be happy to share with you the process and many ways to use the product. I would also agree with debi53 most any older piece can be painted and I also sell a full line of chalk paint that you may be interested in. Little to no prep is necessary and that saves not only time but money....

You can refinish it. If your new at this use stripper. Use glue it looks like it has buckled a little bit, we use a syringe to get the glue underneath the veneer and re-glue. Set heavy things in top of it if any glue squeezes out wipe off or you won't get it off. Then use a stripper to take off the finish. Don't sand it. Look at the grain on the wood, this is why you need to use stripper. Then you can stain it and use water base polyurethane. You can also paint, and seal the top, this is fixable it depends how much your willing to work.

I am going to resend my earlier statement. I have re-read what you posted so I am going to ask you a few questions. Is this veneer or laminate? Laminate is plastic, veneer is wood. If it is plastic you can't strip it. If it is wood you can. Strip Ez walmart brand is the cheapest and it works. if it is plastic they use a contact adhesive and your can try several things to get the spot out. Contact adhesive can be re-glued by using a warm hour to re-activate the adhesive, use a white towel, and warm iron, and also use it in the white spot to draw the moisture out. After you have warmed up the glue set heavy things in top on the table to make sure it adhesion Let me know if this helps.

StripEz they sell it at Lowes. I would use a orbital sander with the highest finishing grit and go over it lightly after your done stripping. Don't push down on the sander just enough for a once over.

I have a laminate dining room table with a chip at the edge. How can it be repaired because it was expensive to buy.
