What is the best way to distress cabinets?

I've heard that some folks apply vaseline to the wood before stain or paint.

Vaseline is an oil.... and could effect whether the wood accepts paint or stain in the future..... better to use sand paper or a sander -

Hello. What I have done to distress a vanity was after I stained it I went over the edges and some spots in the middle of the cabinets doors with sand paper. -

I've seen tutorials with vaseline, but, not wanting to put it on wood, I layer my colors and then lightly sand areas that would normally show wear if I want distressing. -

Ive always sanded by hand or used my sander in the edges.
