How can I avoid repainting brick?

We have a brick wall that clearly needs repointing. Mortar isn't falling out, but moisture is entering our walls and occasionally creating white patches on our dark interior paint (patches that can easily be wiped off). To delay the expense of repointing, is there a coating we could have applied to our wall to keep moisture out? We live in a rainy climate.

  • It's never a good thing to have moisture showing up on your interior walls. I would consult a professional for the best solution. Gayla.

Brick needs to breathe. There should have been weep holes installed in the wall and mortar tapered at edge to permit water to run off.

Better to have it evaluated by a skilled professional now than to incur major damage in the future.

Get references and check contractor's ratings before you sign a contract.

    HI Gayla,

If you're getting patches on your walls, you really should at least have a professional look at it. There may be something going on behind the walls that you can't see. It's certainly better to know the exact reason before you make any decision. If you don't know anyone, you can look in your local paper or phone book. If that doesn't help, try homeadvisor.com or nextdoor.com .

Homeadvisor will give you names of professionals in your area.

Hometalk is divided by neighborhoods and you can ask your neighbors - even those that you don't know - if the know a good person to look at your project. Best wishes to you and your research.
