Maybe just weight or moisture. Is this a plaster or wall board ceiling. You have to find out cause although both I mentioned could be possibilities.
Your foundation may be settling and this will cause the ceiling and/or walls to crack. An Architect can tell you .
Probably a stress crack where two sections meet and were jointed and taped when the ceiling was installed. If there are no wide gaps, you can force jointing compound into the crack to fill it, then mud and tape the crack. Let it dry for 24 hours, the fan out your compound over the tape in two or three applications, allowing it to dry between coats. Finally, sand smooth and repaint. You'll probably have to repaint the entire ceiling to make it look right.

My first thought is that your house settled and caused the crack. I had a similar issue with a vaulted ceiling. I sanded the whole crack, and then used spackle to fill in. I let it sit for a couple of days to dry really well, then sanded and repainted.
Cause is most likely settling of house which is common. Fix is to apply dry wall mud then mesh for dry wall then more dry wall mud. After its dry sand and reapply mud if necessary and sand again.
