Better safe than sorry, LC. Shutting off the water will help to prevent your home from extensive flooding/damage should your pipes burst from freezing, but remember that your pipes and plumbing fixtures (water heater and toilets) will still contain water that could freeze during bitter cold unless they're emptied. You may end up having to replace them, but the the damage to the rest of your home will be as minimized as possible.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVItL66doqwHelpful Reply -

Here are some tips for you. I would keep the thermostat no lower than 55.http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/how-to/g113/7-things-to-do-before-you-leave-for-vacation/http://traveltips.usatoday.com/home-ready-leaving-winter-vacation-109086.htmlHelpful Reply -

Turn the water heater off. Don't forget to lower (drastically) your thermostat too.Helpful Reply -

if you have well insulated home, insulated pipes and leave the heating on low -- approx. 50 degrees--I wouldn't turn OFF water (you do mean outside at the meter?) and if you're THAT worried... have a friend check on your place once a week or so-- especially after a snow or ice storm, etc.Helpful Reply -

Personally I wouldn't do that as the weather is so unpredictable these days.Helpful Reply -
