Why must I flush my toilet twice.

Always flushes completely on the second flush not the first. I have adjusted the trip lever, changed the fill valve, changed the flapper, cleaned the under rim jets and still required 2 flushes.

I'm not a plumber, but I think your tank is not filling up with enough water. Take a bucket, fill it with water and pour some in the tank, so the floater is half covered, then flush . See if that works, if so open the faucet under the toilet a quarter turn, and this should fill the tank. Flush again, see if it flushes with one try. Good Luck!

Linda, I have felt your frustration. Looking into my crystal ball I see that you have a porcelain appliance built in the 1990s, right? That was the time when the feds stepped in and mandated low water use toilets. The manufacturers struggled with the requirements. After a decade or two they came up with solutions that actually work. I recently changed toilets in both of my bathrooms and the less expensive one, a highly rated Glacier Bay from Home Depot that sells for $88, flushes first time every time. Changing toilets is actually an easy job, few tools, and the toilet comes with all the parts you'll need except the supply line. You kick your old toilet to the curb and your worn out toilet lever pushing fingers can relax with a vacation of pressing nothing more strenuous than the buttons on the TV remote.

I had one like that, but holding the handle (on the outside of the tank) down longer worked. Otherwise the above suggestion is good.

Some toilets have 3” pipes and can clog up with feces easier. The better ones have 4”.
